I'd buy it. You can also collect money from people while on the trip to avoid paypal crap. Just keep a log book with you on who paid ya money while on the trip.

Jeff, I want to contribute footage but don't know what camera to get. Can you suggest a reasonably priced HD camcorder to get? Not a super cheap one, not not a ridiculously expensive one.

The first in-car camera test is online. I already ordered pieces I need from RAM-Mount; I use their stuff on my motorcycle (for the GPS and video camera on the handlebars) and their stuff is heavier and more durable, so it should have more mounting options, hold tighter, and transmit less vibration. I just wanted to get a feel for what the shots would look like from the different locations on the car, just in case my brother doesn't come along to be my mobile camera-man. (Don't mind the ad - apparently, YouTube found a way to embed ad videos.) Click here to see the video in regular size and HD.

Holy shit, I know exactly where that road is. The house on stilts next to the delaware not too far from the Frenchtown bridge. My brother doesn't live far from there.
I have tried the flexi pod with my Aiptek and it wasn't the best. I picked up a $2 plastic tripod that might work slighty better. I'm pretty sure I can use a lipstick cam but I never really looked into it.

Jeff what Aiptek is that? I bought the Insignia and Aiptek A-HD and have been playing with the insignia before I open the Aiptek. When I play the AVI files from the Insignia on my computer they look no better than my non-HD MiniDV camera. What am I doing wrong? What do I have to do to the files in order to get the HD quality playback. I am using VLC Mdeia player to view the AVI files.
And is that River Road in Washington's Crossing? If so that's where my parents live. How close are you to there?

It's a ways above Washington's Crossing, but that's the road. I'm down in NE Philly near Franklin Mills - it takes me about 25-30 minutes to get to New Hope from my apartment.
I'm using the bottom-of-the-line Aiptek P-HD; it's only 720p resolution, with no optical zoom. It was on sale at Target a few weeks ago for $88, but I just bought my brother one for Xmas at the full price of $119 (no more sale). I didn't want to spend a lot on a camera that I may be strapping to the outside of the car while I'm driving.
I'm not at all familiar with the Insignia camera. Make sure you're viewing the files at 100% actual size on playback. Also, double-check the camera's settings that you're recording at the highest resolution. I've noticed with the Aiptek (it records as .mov files) that when I play the raw files back in QuickTime, I get that vibration "interference" (like scrambled frames) that I used to get with the miniDV from time to time, yet when I play the videos with the included (ArcSoft) software it's fine. Also, when I edit/convert the files with the included ArcSoft software, it's fine. For some reason, ArcSoft reads the files fine, but QuickTime reads some scrambled frames where the camera was jostled. My advice: use any included software to convert the raw files to mpeg or something else that you can edit.
Whatever you capture this trip, make sure I get a copy. I may be bringing a laptop this trip; if so, I can grab all your video each night at the hotel.
