so you have bought and isnstalled your first CB radio and you have no idea what does what.
turn the power on, most radios it is the knob on the left which is also the volume. adjust the volume to your liking. an external speaker help for those who install the radio in a the dash somewhere.
channel selector - pretty easy to figure out. we tend to use channel 25 but subject to change, we will let you know at the start of the drive. BEWARE THAT A LOT OF CB's DO NOT REMEMBER CHANNEL # WHEN YOU HAVE TO START/RESTART THE CAR!
RF gain - this allows you adjustability of the recieve portion of your radio. for this trip i would suggest you turn it all the way up.
squelch - this allows the user to "mute" noise and unwanted signal. an unwanted signal is the normal static/hiss/white noise found on a any radio frequency. to set the squelch correctly you will want to turn the knob up just intil the noise stops, then back down a very tiny amount. you will find during the drive that things such as high power lines will cause an increase to the normal noise. IF YOU TURN UP THE SQUELCH IN A NOISY AREA, DONT FORGET TO TURN IT BACK DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you get into a situation where you are stuck at a light and others have made it through, turn the squelch all the way down you dont want to miss any inportant info. as distance increases between radios the signal level goes down thus forcing you to listen to some white noise for a short while.
mic gain - most CB's that are used on this trip do not have this knob, it is found on more expensive radios. this option allows you to adjust how sensitive the mic is. turn it up to much and you will be loud and garbled, to little and you wont be heard. setting it for 60-70% is good.
to talk, push the lever on the side of the mic, give about 1 second before talking then talk with the mic close to your mouth. if you have mic gain controll you will not have to hold the mic so close.
