A few years ago, I made a few DVDs from some motorcycle vacations. Most of them were filmed by at least two of us, with cameras mounted on the bikes as well as hand-held around the campsite and at lunch stops. The final edited DVDs were a mix of video footage and photo slideshows put to music. I'm no video professional by any means, just a hobbyist.
This Christmas I'm dropping the hint to my folks about the HD digital video camera I want (it's only like $600 refurbished, but I need to spend my money on snow tires first), and I still have my old miniDV camera. My brother is planning on tagging along as my navigator for this year's 48 Hours, so he can act as a second camera-man.
I'll need to put together an outline, so I know what shots I want to get over that weekend, but it would be something like:
When I did one motorcycle vacation DVD for a gathering of about 40 Bandit riders, I ended up selling some of the DVDs online to other participants. My costs added up to about $4.85 plus shipping per DVD (that included the disc, printed label, standard plastic DVD case with full-color cover, and printed insert). I figure if folks are willing to pay $20 each (including shipping), over $10 of that would go to the charity. It would be easy enough for me to set up a web page with a PayPal button and ship them out from my home.
I just need to know if folks would be interested in this, before I go through the trouble of planning it all out. It does end up being a bit of a sacrifice on what would normally be a vacation; getting shots when everyone else is relaxing, seeing the entire weekend through a camera, and basically "jobbing it" all weekend. I stopped doing it on motorcycle trips because it felt like work. However, if people are interested, and will buy the DVDs (thereby contributing more to the charity fund and raising our total for the year) it would be well worth the effort for my brother and I to do it. I would also be soliciting anyone else's videos and pictures to be included.
If anyone wants a sample, I can put something together soon from the pics and video clips from last year. It won't be too pretty, since the video clips online are kind of reduced in resolution (which is fine for viewing online, but its better to work with full-res images and video when editing). I'll make it something like a 30-second promo for this year's event. Give me the weekend to compile the pics and video and throw it together.
So, I guess this post is to ask if this is a project people would be interested in? My brother and I can start work on the outline (to make sure we get all the shots we want, and to make editing go that much quicker afterwards) and logistics (tripods, camera batteries, media, etc) right away, if we get the green light. So, anyone like this idea, or am I spinning my wheels?

- People arriving and being greeted/reunited at the Holiday Inn
- Breakfast at SOA and some comments by the SOA execs
- Some on-road footage throughout the weekend
- SDC and VTSC visits and comments from folks there
- Very brief interviews with participants (why they participate, what they like best, or just showing off their car)
- Some words from the organizers about how the event started
- Definitely the Saturday night dinner and raffle with Dr G as emcee
- Some original soundtrack from unsigned artists
- And maybe some footage from the scouting run as a bonus feature
